Default British Currency on SS

you guys might have seen the thread about British Currency being disallowed on SS. Well its not something Ive tried to sell anyway, as most of my currency is alway spent lol.

I found this a bit offensive tho:

Quote:
go to the streets of london and see security cameras everywhere you walk ...
they are paranoid beyond belief.
Now the thread is locked and I cant even have my two pence worth, or should that be cents now that I cant use British Currency pmsl.

Who isnt paranoid in this day and age, with all the shi*te going on in the world. Im not going to rake up the last few years events, but has this person been walking around with blinkers?? I'd rather have paranoid authorities than another attack on London :x

The problem with the street cameras is they don't seem to prevent crime or terrorists, they just let us see what they looked like after the event. It must cost a fortune to maintain all those cameras and have people looking at the screens 24/7/365. Did they deter the 7/7 terrorists?

Surely that money could be put to better use.

I've never been to Britain, just once on an emergency stopover for a few hours at Bentwaters Air Base. However, I would love to tour England someday, as I've always had a fascination with English culture and all things English. I don't think knowing there were cameras everywhere would make me feel any safer. Armed paramilitary police carrying huge automatic weapons patrolling everywhere would make me feel much safer, but then that would destroy the touristy feeling. Not that they could totally stop an attack either, but they sure could make life difficult for the attackers.
Oh, well. I just hope they never disrupt the tea trade, as I would find life extremely difficult without my PG Tips.

Im sure someone British could arrange to send you some on the forum lol. The other reason why we probably have alot of CCTV is in some of the cities there is alot of street crime. Im not British born myself, Ive lived here for 13 years and my dad was born here. Ive lived in some really beautiful scenic parts of the country, but then again Ive also lived in what was voted Britain's worst street for crime. So Ive seen both sides. I know that CCTV might not prevent crime, but hopefully it will deter those who intend to commit it, in the hope that they will be found and punished. As for armed troopers, I dunno lol. I had alot of that growing up when I was a child during the conflict years in Namibia, south west africa.
But like you say it still does not stop an attack. We still had bombings and lots of people died in the struggle.

Photobunny, talking about paranoid, not sure if you heard about the incident but the CEO of Fotolia got stopped by the police while taking pictures outside of the residence of the French Prime Minister. You have to watch those security cameras! Was pretty good for a laugh. Here's the article....

******************************************

Fotolia CEO Detained by Police for Taking Pictures

CEO's day ruined by taking pictures.

Early afternoon in Paris today, Fotolia CEO Thibaud Elziere was out for a walk and testing the new Nikon D80 digital camera. However, one image would change the rest of his day.

Walking down the Rue Vaneau in Paris, Thibaud captured an image of a CCTV camera similar to one posted here. Within minutes, Thibaud was approached by the French Police and detained for the better part of the day.

Unknown to Thibaud he had captured the CCTV camera of the French Prime Minister?s personal residence and caused a great security concern. According to Thibaud, there were no signs or warnings about photography in the area. A simple click and his day was ruined.

The police questioned him about what he was doing in the area, if he had any terrorism connections, about his work, and why he would want to take a picture of a CCTV camera. Thibaud relates that his first answer of ?taking pictures for fun? did not satisfy them. He soon outlined his connection with Fotolia and testing the camera. After 8 hours of questioning and background checks, they returned his camera and escorted him home. In a good faith effort and without request Thibaud deleted the image.

Thibaud said he feels no malice or bad feelings towards the police or the prime minister but due to the current terrorism issues in the world, his experience was an inconvenience and should be a warning to other photographers.

In an effort to help photographers avoid this problem in the future, Thibaud makes the following recommendations:

1. Avoid photographing security and highly sensitive areas
2. Always carry personal id and work id (like a business card)
3. Be kind and answer questions honestly if approached by the police
4. Do not joke with security personel and police

OMG! Poor guy, luckily no harm done but 8hrs questioning, thats mad lol. I was on a rooftop the other day, doing some photography for the building contractors, I spotted a CCTV and thought that might be interesting! I was rather tempted to take the shot from the front, but instead I thought better of it and just took a side shot lol. Good job as well as it is quite a huge company, all Im saying its the fourth emergency service in the UK lol!
