True, there is probably some variation or margin of increase in downloads when you go exclusive. It's understandable, especially from a buyer standpoint. If you buy an exclusive istock image, you know exactly how many times that image was purchased by others. With non-exclusives, there is no way to know that.
Still, I consider it a numbers game anyway, especially when my earnings at other sites trump my istock earnings by a lot some months. Usually istock is my top earner, but not always. One month recently, istock only made up 30% of my total earnings. I'd be crazy to go exclusive with numbers like that, even if I were at a diamond level.
