I'm really trying to learn Illustrator CS3 and have made great progress. One question I can't seem to find is what resolution to set when opening a new file, 300 dpi or screen resolution (72 dpi). The problem is that when I save a 300 dpi size vector as .ai CS3 the saved file size is 1.8 mb. But when saved as a required EPS Version 8 that same file comes up as a whopping 29.9 mb. that takes forever to upload.

Am I missing something.

I have the same problem and really hope that someone has the right answer. It will be very helpful. I also ended with too big files on EPS.
Illustratror CS 3 is quite a program to learn !

Thanks Christine! The info has been updated.

I make all of my illustrations really small, say 100 x 200 pixels. That's the only way I know how to reduce the file size.

THANKS Karimala! By reducing the beginning document size to around 400 pixels x 400 pixels the resulting saved file size was way smaller, just a few mbs.

I just uploaded my first eps and jpg files to iStock, SS, and Dreamstime. Wish me luck.

Good luck... hope you make it. I still work hard to learn that program and don't really decide myself to put one on microsites yet.

great thread. I thought it was eps 10, but now I know most sites need 8. I also just learned about the svg format for fotolia - thanks guys

Karin - might want to add that you can now upload vectors at Featurepics, as well. You can add eps to an existing approved vector, or you can upload following this method:
Instructions for uploading Vector Graphics Images

Smile Vector question

Hi all,

Thanks for the list, it a big help. I'm very new to Illustrator and vectors. I've learned that you can convert a photoshop file to a vector with Livetrace (haven't done one yet). My question is this: For Microstock, once you open the photoshop file in Illustrator (for the conversion) how is the file to be saved (size, etc)? For example, I have a photoshop illustration 3008x2000 which I'd like to convert into a vector. Do I have to resize this and how do I do it in Illustrator?

Another thing: Some site require submission of a eps file and a jpg. In my case, would the jpg be the one I originally created in photoshop or are they referring to a jpg created in Illustrator?

Thanks in advance,
Jackie

Thanks, Todd! The info has been added. Do you know if they have additional guidelines, such as file size limits or Illustrator compatibility?

I uploaded an SVG to FT, and it shows up in grayscale in the thumbnail...did I do something wrong? or is there just something wrong with the site?
