A Night at the Carnival Tent
or, how I spent an evening with the Chief Instigator and the Community Impresario of Lucky Oliver
Monday evening, I was lucky enough to meet Bryan and Jill of Lucky Oliver who were in town promoting the site at the HOW conference. We hooked up after the show closed for the day at the Holiday Inn where they were staying. (Glad to see they aren't wasting our tokens on more upscale digs). Jill had a friend in town, so at her suggestion we loaded into my car and headed out to Virginia/Highlands and Little Five Points. These are two funky little areas of towns that house some of the local hippies, yuppies, bohemians, and probably a carnie or two.
While wandering around shooting some of the local architecture and street scenes, Bryan was busy chatting up the locals and promoting Lucky Oliver. We met at least three photographers or designers who now know about our corner of the net, including one guy who only took about 5 minutes to show us a picture of his dog on his Blackberry. We also met a homeless man from Belize who obviously had encountered photographers before. I am surprised he didn't carry a model release and a contract with him.
As the sun began to set and your truly began to tire, Bryan gallantly left Jill standing alone on a street corner (you'll have to jump in and defend yourself here, Bryan), while he and I headed back to his hotel. We were able to discuss at great length all the things he was up that he couldn't talk about, places he was going he couldn't disclose, and people he was meeting with secret identities. All in all it was a most informative ride.
In all seriousness, it was a lot of fun and I'm glad I got to meet these two. Bryan has enough energy, ideas, and drive to get the job done, Jill has enough sanity to keep him in check, and I'm looking forward to what the future brings to Lucky Oliver.
Like maybe some sales.
Sorry, Bryan, you know I couldn't help at least one dig at you.
