Default Noise

Ok Im pretty annoyed! :x I just cant seem to get rid of the noise levels my camera seems to be producing indoors. Shutterstock keeps rejecting images for this. I shoot in ISO 200,I use a tripod. And I have turned the long exposure Noise Reduction thingy on. What am I doing wrong? I do noise removal in photoshop, I make sure theres none visible after sharpening only once. Why me??

I had the same problem. Have you tried Neat Image?

Made a considerable difference for me. It's sharpening abilities are pretty good too.

At current exchange rates you can get the Pro version for under £29.

What camera are you using? Some produce more noise than others.

I find 100asa is a lot better than 200 but getting the exposure spot on is the main factor.

First get the exposure right or just a little overexposed.

next go to the lowest ISO your camera has.

The tripod doesn't have anything to do with noise.

If you have more than 4MP to play with resize down to 4MP.

Instead of noise removal software either built in or plug in, just use the blur brush around 35% and only go over the area's that need the noise removed.

What I do is to look at the image at 200% for noise that way when the reviewers look at it at 100% they shouldn't be able to find noise.

doing it this way I haven't had an image rejected for noise except one that I forgot to go over before I submitted it.

Hi Thanks for all your replies!

Yep tried neatimage but think I need to fiddle a bit more, I seem to lose detail when using it. Unfortunately the Nikon D50 has the lowest shutterspeed of 200. I think I will try overexposing a little to see if that helps. However my latest batch of submissions to SS have just been accepted. Sometimes Its just the textures I think that are being mistaken for noise. Could it be that it is caused by the slow shutterspeeds I use? I generally use a tripod and then let the self-timer do the work. I dont touch the camera in order to make sure that I dont cause camera shake. I may consider using 4 megapixel in the future, so far Ive been shooting everything at 6megapixel in jpeg fine.

Ayesha,
Are you sure you are getting rejected for noise? Don't they usually lump
"noise, artifacting, or pixelation" together for that type of rejection?
In regards to noise, overexposing does seem to work for me. You don't want to overdo it with a subject that has a large dynamic range (very dark and light areas), but I've sometimes overexposed by about 1.5 stops and gotten super noise-free results. Of course, the files have to be worked on to get the exposure levels correct, but it's worth the trouble and definitely easier than trying to get rid of noise.

what does artifacts and pixelation look like Hugh? And what would cause that? I try and use the same lighting set up for most of my indoor stuff, but some get thru some dont

How be you post some examples - slices from a couple of the rejections @ 100% so we can have a look and maybe offer some advice?

Well, I'm not seeing any artifacts in that, nor much in the way of noise, really.

The darker areas - the shadowing and not quite black background are likely to be the areas where there are noise, if it's there at all.

You might try running the blur tool around the darker/shadow areas - don't use it at 100%, try maybe 50 or 60% and then resubmit it in a week or two.

It's possible the reviewer mistook that breaded coating as being noisy or maybe even pixelated. At first glance I thought I saw a little pixelation on the lower portions of it, but looking at it more closely I realized it was just the texture.

I took a copy of your crop and I'll open in PS and look closer, but I don't see much problem with it - since I can't see the rest of the photo, I'm wondering a little about the lighting in this (course, I have no idea what colour they are supposed to be either  )
