Default Selling Prints

Hi everyone. I found this site through Shutterstock and I am learning a lot already (especially from Rinder and Gracey). I am fairly new to digital, just bought a D50 after using a Minolta SRT-201 for a couple years. Looking forward to learning more from everyone

Alright, so on to the question. What website would you use to sell individual prints of high quality work? I am looking for a site that will take the digital image, print it, then ship to the buyer. So far I have not been able to find a site that will provide the service without trying to get money up front.

I'll be out on vacation for the next week (going to get lots of great pictures I hope). Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

Smugmug is one site - you can even elect to set up an entire website there.

For prints I use EZPrints.com. Prices are reasonable, turn-around time is good as well. There is no fee to use them (smugmug has a registration fee).

One site I am considering is Photogateway.com. My sister-in-law has used it as a consumer and liked it. It is a monthly subscription type of site that is more art related than stock. Users can print some sizes of prints themselves for free or order larger versions for an additional fee (depending on size). I have started the process of becoming a photographer for them but haven't completed yet. Looks like a decent model for more artistic shots as opposed to stock.

Yep, I was originally looking for an outlet outside of microstock for landscapes, and other "art" style photos. I have come to realize that the market is extremely small, and made up of very talented photographers. Most of them go to shows around the country to exhibit their work and sell prints. Then again, the more I stick around and learn, the worse my estimation of my own work becomes. I might only have 2 or 3 pics that would be worth selling (compared to the 60-80 when I posted this thread).

Hi, I don't know what your portfolio looks like, but if you check out most of the images for sale on Cafepress, the photography tends to be fairly amateur. I think it has to do with the fact that most people are there selling other stuff, and they may be great designers but only put in their photography as an afterthought.
If you have a portfolio of professional quality images, and you can come up with creative and visually appealing designs for them, it may actually work. Certain categories of stock photography fit this model very well for the kind of junk they sell there, if you can do this, and you will have an advantage because most of the people there would need to pay more money than is worth the effort to license professional quality imagery to resell on their products.

Thanks for the reply Marco.

I do have an account over at Cafepress, never got around to selling photos there though. The layout and mechanics of the site make me want to stab myself in the eye. I might try putting up a couple images just to see what happens.

Oh yeah, and I finally put my portfolio in my sig. FP was my first uploaded site, so lots of the pics arent really up to my "new" standards. But you never know. I sold a landscape pic today and it was one of the pics that I considered crap...

Yeah, the mechanics and layout of tha site take a little getting used to, it gets easier if you play with it a little bit and there are some really convineinet features. The most time consuming thing other than keywording is having to resize your photos so they fit on that particular product.

You will also have to have alot more than a few products up to make any money there, just like you would need to have more than a few stock photos up to make any money at that. I have been taking this seriously for about 2 weeks now, I have now made well over a hundred products and have had two sales in the last week. But it is a start, and coming up with designs is actually kinda fun for me too.

It looks like you have been doing some hiking in the Sierras. If you got a recent sale on Featurepics you are ahead of me. I sold a few in the first month, uploaded a bunch more photos and haven't sold a thing since July.
