Default New Mouse

I never know if this is the right place for equipment or things like this. Maybe someone can comment on whether this looks interesting or if I should go for a tablet? From what I understand, tablets are not cheap!

Enter Razer’s Lachesis gaming mouse. Although the Lachesis is primarily targeted at hardcore gamers, we’re guessing designers and engineers may find it useful as well. According to Razer’s Web site, the cutting-edge Lachesis incorporates a newly developed 3G laser sensor with a sensitivity of 4000 dpi. The standard mouse has an 800 dpi optical sensor, so we’re talking about movement at speeds five times faster than that of a standard mouse.
I thought this may be of interest. At $79 it's a bit pricey, but since I don't own a tablet, maybe I can move up a step and have better accuracy for editing?

Might be nice, but other than precision a tablet has pressure sensitivity that I don't you will ever get in a mouse. To me it is just not natural to draw with a mouse. I think you could get a refurb from Wacom for just a bit more and be way happier.

I'll have to look into it again. I saw the prices people wrote here and figured a couple hundred for a tablet was a bit much, for editing photos. I don't do illustrations and have a negative artistic index, for drawing or painting. :-D

So do I want a tablet for photo editing? I have four computers connected to one monitor, mouse, keypad. One is for music, one for general use aka business backup, shipping, pdf document creation, one for photo and the last is being set up for video.

One on the other desk is for surfing, email, and the main business system. Laptops are barely usable. I did get a discarded Toshiba Satellite with Pentium 4, but it has quirks, like turning itself on while it's in the bag, and things like that.

Most of these are discards that I brought up to standards, that's why I have divided them for duties. Best one until last week was a 2.4 GHz Dell GX260, 2.2 GHz Celeron, they get much worse from there, like 800 MHz and slower.

New video editing computer was a moment of insanity and I'm going to love it. Not telling until I get it up and running, but then I need to move everything photo/video over there. Should be able to handle Vegas 7 and CS2 without blinking.

They have a 4x5 Graphire4 refurb for 79.95 a new Bamboo Fun medium is on 99. I have a 6x8 on my main machine, but 4x5's on my notebook and another desktop, they work equally as well even though I prefer the 6x8.
Warning: Once you go pen (and get used to it) you might never use a mouse again.

I have never used a mouse. I have always used trackballs. And so does my brother in law, whom designs postal stamps for a living.

I like using a tablet, I get better precision than with a mouse, tho that might just be my hand.

The other thing is that if you have multiple input devices, you can switch between them. For me, this has proved a really good way to avoid repetitive stress injuries. And although spending money for this reason may seem a bit luxurious, having injured my wrist in the past, I feel pretty confident in saying to that 100 dollars would be a bargain when compared to the costs of time lost and treatment.

Do you have a problem with inaccuracy? I find i'm generally zoomed in when messing with small details so picking between individual screen pixels is never important.

I definitely recommend the low-end Wacom over any kind of mouse for photo editing, though i use a mouse for normal desktop stuff.

Good point. Multiple tools for pro is a must. For retouching, image editing in Photoshop i'll use wacom tablet. For ordinary desktop work i use Logitech MX revolution. The best mouse i've ever had.

I've tried countless mice, some that I liked and some that sucked big time. Out of all of them, amazingly enough the one I like most is the one that came with my imac, Apple's "Mighty Mouse."

Some Kensingtons were ok, but right now I'm all about this Apple mouse. It's annoying to go back to other mice after using this one.

Yeah, its simple. I have a logitech wireless (mx1000 i think) the first laser mouse that came out, and it charges in a docking cradle. I charge it like once every 2 or 3 weeks. It's not great for design work, but more for gaming - fps games.
