Doug,
Very cool site.... I'm up way past my bed time because I couldn't leave it !
I'll hate myself in the morning

I'm sure all this gear must be pretty expensive.... but it is cool.....

I think a kite to lift the cam would be about $100 - Looks like hes using some kind of radio gear that would be expensive , but you never know! you can get some pretty Amazing stuff from japan on ebay pretty cheap..

I don?t think I would put my canon up there but Im thinking about getting hold of an old lightweight digicam with a timer that would do the job

Looks like fun doesn't it..

Thanks but no thanks.

He says he takes the shot looking straight down from the kite - well, how do you manage that and avoid getting stuff you don't want in the shot - you might have to take a hundred shots to get one that works - how do you manage to keep the kite steady enough to get a photo that isn't blurry? Even if you set the timer on a P&S it's only going to go off once, then you have to bring it down and reset.

Probably easier just to hire a plane

There's some pretty awesome photos there, but the work involved isn't worth it for stock, that's for sure. More editing involved than I'd have time for on a regular basis. I hope he gets paid well for those shots - they're very unique.

I wouldn't put either of my cameras up there...uh uh.

The contraption he has made up that the camera hangs on keeps it steady so the shots don't get blurry Grace.....

Dough, the thing I'd do would be to put something the same weight as the camera on the bracket.... like a steel block or something and fly that until I got the hang of how to use it.... that way if it crashed nothing would get broken... then after I learned how to fly the thing well... then put the camera on it....

Another thing I was thinking about, instead of a kite... was using a radio controled plane or chopper.... suspend the camera from it the same way,
to keep the camera level.... but the plane or the chopper would be more stable......

Gracey, you're right... no doubt you get allot of shots you don't want... but with digital you just delete them.....

You can tell Gracey loves her cameras! - Theres no way I would consider putting eiether of my SLR's up there, but a cheapy digicam - maybe..
I would love to hire a plane, maybe when I get rich...

Benny, I think you have a good point - practise would be good before I sent a camera up there. I have a feeling that I wouldn't even notice the effect of the camera if i secured it well enough, On a windy day the kite is powerful enough to lift me off the ground

I used to have a radio control plane, but it was crashed ever time i flew it so probably not the best idea... The radio gear could come in hand though... Hmm

Im keeping my eye out for one of those tiny samsung digicams - they weigh nothing..

We'v got friends in Georgia who have their own plane. Last time we were down they took my husband up for a ride...I was too chicken but I won't be the next time.

Niagara falls has a helicopter rental dude - my husband went up; I think it was $40 for 20 mins (that was a while ago) but you had to wait for a full load (6 people I think) before you got it. I didn't take long to get the seats full, I think we waited about 15 minutes before he got to go up. Takes you right over the falls and the whirlpools, down over the maid-of-the-mist, etc. Probably worth the fee if you can get some decent shots.

That would be amazing, Well worth the $40 - The only thing is you would have to shoot through the glass, But i supose if ts clean you would be focusing a long way past ht e glass anyway.

Im sure I will be visiting the states within the next few years - Im there

If you shoot at the right angel you can get away with it. You must just watch for vibration but there your pilot can help you also. I have done some "strap work" but that is hair raising! NOT MY favourite..

There is some sort of mounting of rubber that you can press against the shield that takes the glare away.
