Default Illustrations for beginners

First of all, I'm pretty much totally green when it comes to illustrations. This is also the reason why I'm coming to you more experienced guys with these questions.

I've just started to put some effort into teaching myself photoshop and now I'm wondering if it's possible to create illustrations in photoshop and upload to the micros. You don't have to go deep into the technicalities (unless you really want to, of course). I'm just wondering, what file formats do you use? What techniques? Is it possible to make vectors with Photoshop CS2? I haven't got Illustrator so no need to get into that;o)

Which of the sites are more inclined to accept backgrounds and other illustrations created in PS?

Thanks for your input!

Paul

I don't do a lot of illustrations but I am thinking of doing more. I have used the free program inkscape to do a few simple vectors Inkscape. Draw Freely.

They have all sold well, so during the winter months I will try and do more. I do a few backgrounds with photoshop but they don't sell as well. SS and DT seem like the best sites for simple illustrations. I was turned down by istock but will try again when I have some more experience. istock also reject all my photoshop backgrounds.

Some people seem to do quite well with illustrations. I've only tried one and it sold a couple of times. I'd like to do more, but I need time to learn.

I can tell you though that you cannot create vector illustrations with Photoshop. You must have an application that will create a vector file like Illustrator or CorelDraw. Photoshop creates a bitmap file. Vectors are completely different. A bitmap is pixel-based and a vector is a set of mathmatical instructions. I hope I explained that right and didn't just embarrass myself! :-D

You can, however, "draw" with Photoshop. Check out the latest "Photoshop Wow!" book and you'll be amazed at what can be done from scratch with Photoshop.

I'm on a Mac so Xara Xtreme is out of the question at the moment. But thanks for the tips guys! Just what I was hoping for. Keep'em coming!

Don't misunderstand what I said. You can create illustrations with PS, but you can't create a VECTOR. A vector is created by a set a mathematical instructions. Bitmaps are pixed-based. That's what PS does.

Maybe I'm not explaining it well?

Here's a site that explains the difference:

Nice tutorial, but nativelight is right. Photoshop can't create an EPS-file, and that's what the micros want. Ofcourse you can upload your illustration as a JPG, but you get less downloads than a EPS.

Way too many popups - even the popup blocker didn'ts top some of them. There's better places that don't do that
