Thanks in advance,

Patrick.

Patrick,
Technically very good. The model and costumes look great. But I didn't get a retro feel. Maybe I expected more dramatic lighting. More like the old Hollywood style black and white. High key lighting? Low key? There are different definitions. I'm taking a course this summer called Dramatic Hollywood style lighting so I hope to learn this particular skill. Good luck to you.

Well I dont know what retro is so I can't judge on that aspect lol. But I really like the shots Patrick. I don't see alot of this type of shot of the 'older' generation. I got a distinct feeling of nostalgia when looking at the subject.I think faded glory, lost youth, is a lovely way to describe the images. I see a lady who has obviously aged and become older, but is still hanging onto her youth and feels young in her heart

Patrick the portraits are very well taken, well lit and exposed.
It's the outfits that don't do it for me, I'm no womens fashion expert but to me they don't work, they have that feeling of 'trying to look the part on a budget' if you understand what I mean.
As I said though I can't fault the actual photography process.

The shots are very well taken, but I just can't imagine where designers would want to use this series. Some of them might work when trying to depict a snooty older rich lady...but other than that, I probably would just browse over them. Amen to your technical skills, though I'd personally never be able to set up lighting as good as that :P

I like the concept. My thoughts are, you could go two ways with this though one is more stockworthy, and the other more artsy (but will still be accepted by some of the agencies - some would eat this up, others would say too much processing in Photoshop). If you go with a light background like you have, try smoothing the wrinkles a bit with the dodge tool. I would also encourage a lot less makeup on the model.

On the other hand, a darker background with creative use of the burn tool around the wrinkles, and darker lighting, would give a terrific artsy effect that seems to be trendy in some circles for advertising these days. My favorite individual that does this is Andrzej Dragan: Andrzej Dragan PHOTOGRAPHY

Here's a tutorial on how he does it (don't worry if you don't understand, you can follow along pretty easily)Free file hosting by Savefile.com

There's also a young kid (OK - 16 or 17 years old is a young kid to me) that does this in Canada with homeless people. His name (and web site) escape me at the moment but it is the same concept.

Have Fun!

Definitely a darker background and more dramatic lighting would make it much more retro! The portraits are good and I am sure will sell quite well for stock, but if you want to get a real retro feel different background and different lighting would do the trick. Great model by the way!
