I covered a mountain bike race this past weekend, for the promoter and Cyclingnews.com. From Cyclingnews I have a request from a sponsor of one of the riders for a shot of her winning the womens race. I'm new to the business end, I have no idea what is normal to charge for a photo/file.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Jack

Do you mean just a print for her, if so the usual rate here in the UK for a 10x8 is usually about £12.50 mounted.

If it's for some kind of commercial use you'll need to get more details.

If you covered the event as a hired photographer, then the event promoters own the images, unless you've got a written contract that says you can sell them individually. At least in the US and Canada, though I'm not sure about other places.

I actually covered the event for the promoter as a favor to him, he is a very good friend, and I would much rather shoot than help setup, cleanup or stand at an aid station which I seem to do anyway. As a cyclist I do it also to help in some way to make the event larger, it is now on the national ultra endurance MTB series, so even though I shot it for no pay I do have ulterior motives. Anyway we already agreed any I sold would be mine.
In a response from the company, it is a one time only in a small trade magazine so I'll work from that. Boy, stock is much simpler.

Jack,
In that case my advice would be look up on Alamy how much they would charge for a photo in that sort of magazine/size/circulation and base your price round that, I'd also request that they add your credit to the image.

Whatever you choose a sale is a sale.
