Well there are some more uncivilized ways if you can spare some fingers.

I have some editorial of a Filipino guy busting like a ton of coconuts in his backyard. Well it was a sunday afternoon and the entire extended family was there. We had to swallow hectoliters of virgin coconut oil, I guess the next day we hadn't any cholesterol left in our blood.

He did it with one swift blow with his bolo, without removing his other hand from the nut. Yes and he still had all his fingers! A bolo is a giant sharp knife they use for everything, splitting coconuts, clearing a way through the jungle, and killing each other when they get drunk (usually 1 beer is OK, after 2 beers they hit the floor).
