Default Lighting Questions

I am hoping to have earned enough over the next few months to invest in studio lighting. Availability in the UK, the leading companies seem to be Bowens and Elinchrom but I cannot find a way of comparing like with like with them. I want to start off with a decent set so that I can add to them if necessary in the future rather than feel that I need to replace them.

I wish to continue with the object photography but also start to shoot more people and any advice or comments would be much appreciated, such as with the Bowens would 750 watts be the best idea and are three lights a lot better than two and why?

If the above size is a good all round light what is the equivalent in the Elinchrom

What exactly are modelling lamps and are they part of the main flash unit - the more I read the more confused I seem to be getting :?

I will stop there to see if I get any answers

Christine
