Default Copyright issues with political symbols?

Just had this image accepted at most sites, but shot down at DT because of copyright issues.

I'm assuming the copyright issues refer to the democrat and republican political symbols (donkey and elephant), but I was under the impression that those symbols were just general symbols, not copyrighted by anyone. Sort like the American flag... it represents the people of the US, but isn't copyrighted by the people. Same here... these two symbols represent two political parties, but I din't think they anyone actually holds the copyright to them.

Am I wrong about this? I've considered resubmitting without those symbols, but it sort of takes away from the image. Do I have an argument worth bringing up with DT reviewers?
